Built in the early 1890s, the Melrose Family YMCA has served generations of residents as a place for health, connection, and community. Over the past several years, the historic facility has undergone a series of carefully planned renovations to improve accessibility while preserving the character of one of Melrose’s most enduring landmarks.

Recent improvements include the installation of a fully accessible elevator, ADA-accessible locker rooms and showers, improved interior access routes, and a new accessible entrance door. Together, these upgrades represent a significant investment in ensuring that members of all abilities can fully participate in YMCA programs and services.

Renovating a building that is more than 130 years old requires thoughtful design and long-term planning. Each phase of work has been completed with care to respect the building’s historic structure while meeting modern accessibility standards.

“Our responsibility is twofold,” said Kathleen Walsh, President and CEO of the YMCA of Metro North. “We are stewards of an important historic building, and we are also committed to creating a YMCA that is welcoming and accessible to everyone. These improvements reflect our promise to open doors to opportunity while honoring the legacy of this special place.”

The Melrose Family YMCA remains committed to continued progress, transparency, and preservation as it serves the evolving needs of the community today and into the future.
