The YMCA of Metro North, in collaboration with the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson will be hosting free 30-minute swim lessons at each of our branches on Thursday, June 20th. The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™, created by the World Waterpark Association in 2010, is a global event that helps the aquatics industry work together to build awareness about the importance of teaching children to swim and to prevent drowning.
Drowning is the second leading cause of injury-related deaths for U.S. children ages 1-14. Research shows risk of drowning can be reduced by 88% if children participate in formal swim lessons by the age of 4. WLSL™ will celebrate it’s 10th anniversary by holding local events at hundreds of locations in more than 20 countries on five continents over the course of 24 hours!
“This event is an important one to me personally. I learned to swim from a program similar to this at my local YMCA growing up. I hope to continue to pass this knowledge off to more people in our communities the Metro North YMCA serves,” explains Benjamin Allis, Association Aquatic Advisor. “The YMCA of Metro North is proud to host this event. Studies have shown that 54% of Americans do not know how to swim or lack the basics in water safety. We hope to continue to close this gap with programs like this.”
As an additional bonus, participants of the free lessons will each receive an $8 off coupon that can be redeemed towards a future session of swim lessons through the end of 2019. Advanced registration for the lessons is recommended. Please contact the Welcome Center at your local branch to secure your spot and be a part of this exciting opportunity!
