Camille and Ruth rarely miss their weekly fitness class at the Saugus Family YMCA. Even surgeries can’t keep Camille, 95, and Ruth, 78, away for long. Y members for over a decade, they are part of a group of seniors who regularly attend the Y’s “Stay Fit” class, a whole body conditioning class targeted at the older adult population offered 3 mornings a week in Saugus. The consistent physical activity has proved to have a tremendous impact on their overall health. Ruth had her second knee replaced in August and was up walking after 2 weeks with no walker. “The doctor told me that I was a good candidate for surgery because I had been doing aerobics for so many years,” Ruth explains. Camille had surgery this summer to repair a broken hip and she was back at the Y in class doing what exercises she could by the fall! The Y has not only provided Camille and Ruth with the opportunity to stay healthy and active, but has also given them a community and sense of belonging. “It’s the best thing I ever did, joining the Y,” Camille said. “My favorite thing is that everyone is so wonderful.”
