National Senior Citizen Day – Wednesday August 21, 2019


The Melrose Family YMCA plans to celebrate National Senior Citizen Day on Wednesday, August 21st by inviting local seniors into the branch for free classes and an exclusive membership offer.  For one day only adults, ages 65+, are invited to try the Melrose Family YMCA free of charge.  Throughout the day the Y will offer free classes geared towards the senior population which include: Water Fitness from 9:00am-9:55am, Chair Yoga from 11:00am-11:45am, Pickleball from 12:00pm-1:00pm, and Aquatic Stretch from 1:00pm-1:55pm.

In addition to free classes throughout the day the Melrose YMCA is also offering big savings when seniors join the Y as members on August 21st.  New members of the Y who take out a Senior or Senior Couple membership on Wednesday, August 21st will have all membership fees waived until September 1st!  The Melrose YMCA is waiving the one-time join fee of $25 per adult and the prorated membership dues for the remainder of August, a savings of up to $70.

“There is so much we can offer the community at the YMCA for people of all ages.” Membership Director Kelly Curtis, explains, “When I saw that National Senior Citizen day was approaching I just knew it would be the perfect chance to open our building to the older members of our community and show them all the programs at the Y they could be participating in.”

The Y strives to meet the needs of the senior population in our community through diverse and age appropriate programming.  Every day at the Melrose branch you can find a group exercise, water fitness, or strength training class geared towards active older adults.  In addition, the Y offers evidence based health intervention programs for members including: Cardiac Rehabilitation in partnership with Melrose Wakefield Hospital, Enhance Fitness for arthritis, and LiveSTRONG for cancer survivors.
