Summer is an important time for our children’s learning and social and emotional health. Camp Discovery at the Demakes Family YMCA is a day-long program for children ages 4-13.

Camp Discovery is so much more than a typical day camp. It is a place for values, learning, skill-building, self-confidence, and fulfilling dreams. Our program encourages independence and teamwork, leading to happy, healthy, confident kids. Join us. Adventure awaits!

It Pays to be a YMCA Member! A membership at the YMCA of Metro North is a tremendous value! Save on camp this summer when you become a Family Member and maintain your membership through the duration of your camp. Child Care Circuit Vouchers:  Camp Discovery accepts child care vouchers from the state Child Care Circuit. Please inquire about submitting a voucher for payment or other financial assistance options.

A Typical Day

Camp Discovery starts every day with a smile and an open mind, asking ourselves: what will we discover today? Campers wake up their bodies through physical movement and sports, then fuel up with breakfast—often sourced from our rooftop garden. We engage curious minds with STEM experiments, musical adventures, and creative activities, while also building strength and confidence in the Adventure Zone. And, of course, no summer camp experience would be complete without swimming.

Camp Discovery Vision

Camp means something different to every camper who attends. At the core of what camp is, however, are campers and staff who have laughed, played, developed friendships, built confidence, learned new skills, and created memories that last a lifetime. Our programs celebrate the value of each individual and challenge campers and staff to be all that they can be. At the Y, kids gain new skills, make lifelong memories, and grow in ways that set them up for success.

Camp Discovery Goals

• Deliver a summer full of rewarding experiences to campers of all ages.
• Ignite a passion for physical activity and appreciation for each other.
• Encourage campers to try new experiences.
• Give campers the opportunity to belong in a safe and supportive environment.
• Inspire socially responsible campers ready to give back to the community.

Camp Discovery “Skippers” Highlights (Ages 4-6)

• Our youngest campers are guided by counselors at a ratio of 1:5.
• Activities are designed to help foster independence, increase spatial awareness, and encourage imaginative play.
• Use of the small pool.
• Children must be fully potty trained to attend camp.

Camp Discovery “Sailors” Highlights (Ages 7-10)

• Children ages 7-10 will focus on positivity and teamwork, activities that require fine motor skills, and how to use logic and reasoning.
• Activities will include scavenger hunts, acting and basic cooking and food preparation.

Camp Discovery “Captains” Highlights (Ages 11-13)

• Challenge campers to be phone-free this summer.
• Focus on healthy peer relationships, motivation, and body positivity.
• Leadership Club: How to become a mentor and when to ask for help.

Safety at Camp Discovery

YMCA camps prioritize a safe, healthy environment for children, following health expert and local guidelines for hygiene and sanitation.
